Rummikub Rules — How to Play and Keep Score

Rummikub takes the melding idea from rummy and lets you rearrange everything already on the table. Sets and runs on the table belong to nobody, so a single tile from your rack can break three existing groups apart and rebuild them into four, letting you dump half your tiles in one turn. The scoring is deliberately harsh: what matters is not how much you played, but how much you were still holding when someone else finished.

Overview

Rummikub takes the melding idea from rummy and lets you rearrange everything already on the table. Sets and runs on the table belong to nobody, so a single tile from your rack can break three existing groups apart and rebuild them into four, letting you dump half your tiles in one turn. The scoring is deliberately harsh: what matters is not how much you played, but how much you were still holding when someone else finished.

Setup

A set holds 106 tiles: numbers 1 to 13 in four colours, two copies of each, plus two jokers. Shuffle them face down and deal 14 tiles to every player. Leave the rest as the pool. The player who draws the highest tile goes first.

How to play

A valid group is three or four tiles of the same number in different colours. A valid run is three or more consecutive numbers in one colour. Your first play of the game must total at least 30 points, counting only tiles you lay from your own rack, and you may not touch the table on that turn. Jokers used in the opening meld count as whatever number they replace.

Once you have opened, you may rearrange anything already on the table, as long as every group and run on the table is legal again when your turn ends and you have added at least one tile from your rack. If you cannot play, draw one tile from the pool and your turn is over. Leaving the table in an illegal state means putting it back as it was and taking a three-tile penalty.

Scoring

The round ends the moment a player places their last tile. Every other player then adds up the tiles left on their rack at face value, counting each joker as 30, and records that figure as a negative number. The winner records the sum of all those penalties as a positive number.

With four players holding 22, 55 and 8 points of tiles, the round reads -22, -55, -8 and +85. The four entries add up to zero, and that is the check the app should enforce: if the round does not balance, someone has miscounted a rack. The largest penalty possible from one full rack is bounded by the two jokers plus twelve high tiles, so entries below about -180 are worth flagging as a likely typo rather than rejecting.

Totals carry forward across rounds and may go negative, so the score column needs to accept minus numbers.

Ending the game

Play the agreed number of rounds, officially three, then compare cumulative totals. Highest wins. A player who never wins a round but consistently empties their rack down to a few cheap tiles can still finish ahead of a one-time big winner, which is the point of the format.

Common variations

Some households let the winner take only a flat bonus rather than the whole pot of penalties, which keeps scores closer together. Others play a fixed number of games and drop the lowest round for each player. Tournament play adds the one-minute turn timer and forbids rearranging the table on your opening meld.

Worth knowingLosers enter a negative number equal to the tiles left on their rack. The winner enters the positive sum of all those penalties, so the round must add up to exactly zero across the table.

House rules and settings

Every table plays Rummikub a little differently. These are the 8 rules groups argue about. Each one is a setting in the app — and changing it recalculates a match that is already in progress, which is the thing no other score keeper does.

Rounds to play: what is the default in Rummikub?

How many games make up a match. The official tournament length is three; the highest total after the last one wins.

Default: 3. Adjustable from 1 to 10 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Rounds to play”.

Joker penalty: what is the default in Rummikub?

Points charged for each joker still sitting on your rack when someone else finishes. Jokers are the most expensive tile in the box, which is why holding one too long is so painful.

Default: 30. Adjustable from 0 to 50 in steps of 5.

In the app: “Joker penalty”.

Opening meld minimum: what is the default in Rummikub?

The combined value a player must lay down in their very first turn before they are allowed to play at all. Tiles only count towards it if they come from your own rack.

Default: 30. Adjustable from 0 to 50 in steps of 5.

In the app: “Opening meld minimum”.

Winner's score: what are the options in Rummikub?

In the first method the plus column always equals the minus column, which makes mistakes easy to spot. In the second the winner simply scores nothing and the table drifts steadily negative, which some groups find simpler to keep.

Default: Winner takes the sum of all penalties. Two options:

  • Winner takes the sum of all penalties
  • Everyone just records their own minus

In the app: “Winner's score”.

Jokers can be swapped off the table: on or off in Rummikub?

Lets a player replace a joker lying in a set on the table with the real tile it stands for, then use the freed joker themselves. The rescued joker must be played in the same turn.

Default: on.

In the app: “Jokers can be swapped off the table”.

Seconds per turn: what is the default in Rummikub?

A countdown for each player's turn. Tournament play uses one minute. Leave at 0 for no timer.

Default: 0. Adjustable from 0 to 180 in steps of 15.

In the app: “Seconds per turn”.

Tile sets in play: what is the default in Rummikub?

One box holds 106 tiles and comfortably seats up to four. Shuffle two boxes together for five or six players.

Default: 1. Adjustable from 1 to 2 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Tile sets in play”.

Bonus for going out on an empty rack: what is the default in Rummikub?

An optional flat bonus added to the winner's score on top of the penalties collected. Off by default because the official game has no such bonus.

Default: 0. Adjustable from 0 to 100 in steps of 5.

In the app: “Bonus for going out on an empty rack”.

Variants of Rummikub

Six-player game

Two sets combined give 212 tiles and 4 jokers. Deal 14 each as usual; the longer game makes the joker penalty bite harder.

Speed Rummikub

A strict one-minute sand timer per turn. Overrun and you take a penalty tile and put back everything you played that turn.

One-game match

Play a single game rather than three. Scoring is unchanged, but a lucky opening meld matters far more.

Rummikub is also known as

Rummy-O, Rummikid, Sabra, Tile Rummy. These are the same game — the rules and the score sheet above apply to all of them.
