Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring) Rules and Scoring

Hong Kong mahjong is the fast, widely played Cantonese form of the game. Hands are valued in faan — doubles earned for the pattern you built — and faan is turned into payments through a table everyone agrees before play. The scoresheet is unusual for a tile game: every hand is a transfer of value between the seats, so each row must balance to zero.

Overview

Hong Kong mahjong is the fast, widely played Cantonese form of the game. Hands are valued in faan — doubles earned for the pattern you built — and faan is turned into payments through a table everyone agrees before play. The scoresheet is unusual for a tile game: every hand is a transfer of value between the seats, so each row must balance to zero.

Setup

Four players sit as East, South, West and North. Build the wall from all 144 tiles, deal thirteen to each player and fourteen to East. Agree three things at the start: the minimum faan, the faan ceiling, and the base unit. Without those three numbers the game cannot be scored.

How to play

Draw a tile, then discard one, going anticlockwise. You may interrupt to claim a discard for a pung (three alike), a kong (four alike) or, from the player on your left only, a chow (a run of three). A winning hand is four sets plus a pair, and it must be worth at least the agreed minimum faan.

Scoring

Count the winner's faan, cap it at the ceiling, then look up the table value. The half spicy table, multiplied by the base unit, is:

Faan012345678910111213
Value1248162432486496128192256384

It doubles every faan up to four, then doubles every two faan, with odd steps sitting at one and a half times the previous even step.

Call that value V and settle it as follows.

  • Win from a discard. The discarder pays V. The other two pay nothing. Winner +V, discarder −V. A three-faan win off a discard is +8 and −8.
  • Self-drawn win. Every opponent pays half of V. With four players the winner collects 1.5 × V; a three-faan self-draw is +12 for the winner and −4 from each of the three others. With three players the winner collects V.
  • Pao. If the responsibility rule is on and one player is deemed to have fed the hand, that player alone pays the full self-draw amount and the others pay nothing.
  • Half gun. With the sharing option on, a discard win costs the discarder V ÷ 2 and the other two V ÷ 4 each, still totalling V.

Nobody but the winner gains, and losers never pay each other. Whatever combination you use, the four numbers in the row must add to zero — that is the check the app should enforce.

Ending the game

Play the agreed number of hands, normally sixteen for four prevailing winds. When the dealer wins or the hand is drawn, the dealership repeats and the hand does not count toward the total. The sheet counts rows rather than winds, though, so every repeat still fills a row and the last wind arrives early — raise the hands in match settings by one for each repeat and the rotation comes out right. The highest cumulative total at the end wins.

Common variations

Some tables cap at eight or ten faan rather than thirteen, some add flower bonuses, and three-handed play removes a suit and one seat.

Scoring at a glance

Rounds16 fixed
Score sheetOne number per player per round, with a running total

Worth knowingOne plus-or-minus number per player per hand. Every hand is a closed transfer between the four seats, so the row must add up to exactly zero — the app should refuse to save a row that does not.

House rules and settings

Every table plays Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring) a little differently. These are the 8 rules groups argue about. Each one is a setting in the app — and changing it recalculates a match that is already in progress, which is the thing no other score keeper does.

Hands in the match: what is the default in Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring)?

A full session is four prevailing winds of four hands each, which is sixteen. Play four for a quick game. Hands replayed because the dealer won do not count toward this number.

Default: 16. Adjustable from 4 to 64 in steps of 4.

In the app: “Hands in the match”.

Minimum faan to win: what are the options in Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring)?

How valuable your hand must be before you are allowed to declare a win. Three is the Hong Kong standard and keeps players from ending hands cheaply.

Default: 3 faan. Three options:

  • None — any hand can be declared
  • 1 faan
  • 3 faan

In the app: “Minimum faan to win”.

Faan ceiling: what are the options in Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring)?

The highest a hand can be worth. Anything above the ceiling is simply paid at the ceiling, which caps how much one lucky hand can swing the match.

Default: 13 faan. Three options:

  • 8 faan
  • 10 faan
  • 13 faan

In the app: “Faan ceiling”.

Payment table: what are the options in Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring)?

How faan is converted into money or points. Half spicy doubles up to four faan and then doubles every second faan, which stops big hands running away.

Default: Half spicy — the Hong Kong standard. Three options:

  • Half spicy — the Hong Kong standard
  • Full doubling — value doubles at every faan
  • Simple — faan multiplied by the base unit

In the app: “Payment table”.

Base unit: what is the default in Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring)?

What a zero-faan hand is worth. Every number in the payment table is multiplied by this, so set it to 1 for plain points or to your stake for money play.

Default: 1. Adjustable from 1 to 100 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Base unit”.

When the win comes off a discard: what are the options in Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring)?

Whether the person who threw the winning tile carries the whole cost or shares it. Hong Kong tables normally make the discarder pay everything.

Default: The discarder pays the whole amount. Two options:

  • The discarder pays the whole amount
  • Discarder pays half, the other two a quarter each

In the app: “When the win comes off a discard”.

Pao (full responsibility): on or off in Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring)?

If a player feeds the tile that completes an obviously huge hand, they alone pay the entire amount even when the winner draws the final tile themselves.

Default: off.

In the app: “Pao (full responsibility)”.

Flowers and seasons pay a bonus: on or off in Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring)?

A house extra where matching flower or season tiles are worth additional faan. Turn off for a clean game where only the hand pattern counts.

Default: off.

In the app: “Flowers and seasons pay a bonus”.

Variants of Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring)

Half gun

The discarder pays half the amount and the other two players cover a quarter each, softening the punishment for a single unlucky throw.

Three-handed

The bamboo suit or all the character honours are removed and one seat is left empty. Self-draws are paid by two players instead of three.

Single wind

A four-hand match with only the East wind prevailing, for a session that fits into an hour.

Mahjong (Hong Kong scoring) is also known as

Hong Kong Old Style, Cantonese Mahjong, HK Mahjong, Chinese New Style. These are the same game — the rules and the score sheet above apply to all of them.
