Catan Victory Points Rules — How to Play and Score
Most Euro board games end with someone announcing a number that nobody can verify. This is a small running counter per player for exactly that situation: points go up in ones and twos, everyone can see where the race stands, and the game stops the moment somebody reaches the target. It is written around Catan because Catan is the game people most often lose track of, but it works for any race to N points.

Overview
Most Euro board games end with someone announcing a number that nobody can verify. This is a small running counter per player for exactly that situation: points go up in ones and twos, everyone can see where the race stands, and the game stops the moment somebody reaches the target. It is written around Catan because Catan is the game people most often lose track of, but it works for any race to N points.
Setup
Add every player and set the target. Ten is right for the base game with three or four players and stays at ten with the five to six player extension. Seafarers scenarios usually call for 12 or 14 and Cities and Knights calls for 13. Everyone starts at 2 points from their opening settlements unless you enter them as they are built.
How to play
Whenever a player builds, buys or takes something worth points, add the change to their column. Entries are changes, not totals, so a settlement is plus one and losing Longest Road to a rival is minus two for them and plus two for you. Points held on hidden development cards are entered but kept out of the visible standings until the win is claimed.
Scoring
Each settlement is worth 1 point. Each city is worth 2, so upgrading a settlement gains you 1 point rather than 2. Longest Road is worth 2 and goes to whoever holds an unbroken road of at least five segments, passing to a rival only when they build a strictly longer one. Largest Army is worth 2 and goes to the first player to play three knights, again passing only on a strictly larger army. Each victory point development card is worth 1 and stays face down until it wins the game.
Both bonus cards can move during play. Losing one is a two point drop, and when it goes to an opponent the gap between you swings by four.
Ending the game
The first player to reach the target on their own turn wins immediately, hidden cards included. That last clause matters: a player who is pushed to the target by something happening on another player's turn does not win until their own turn comes round. There is no tie — the game stops with exactly one winner.
Common variations
Longer games at 12 or 14 points are common with five or six players because the board fills up faster. Some groups play that all points are open, which removes the surprise ending but keeps the race honest.

| Worth knowing | Entries are changes to a player's point count, not totals. Negative values cover losing Longest Road or Largest Army to someone else. |

House rules and settings
Every table plays Catan Victory Points a little differently. These are the 8 rules groups argue about. Each one is a setting in the app — and changing it recalculates a match that is already in progress, which is the thing no other score keeper does.
Points needed to win: what is the default in Catan Victory Points?
The first player to reach this number on their own turn wins immediately. Ten is the standard game.
Default: 10. Adjustable from 3 to 30 in steps of 1.
In the app: “Points needed to win”.
Which game: what are the options in Catan Victory Points?
Picking a preset fills in the usual target for that game. You can still change the target afterwards, and the generic option turns this into a plain race to any number of points.
Default: Catan base game - 10 points. Five options:
In the app: “Which game”.
Break points down by source: on or off in Catan Victory Points?
Off by default, which just counts points. Turn it on to record where each point came from, so you can see who is one city short.
Default: off.
In the app: “Break points down by source”.
Points per settlement: what is the default in Catan Victory Points?
How much a settlement is worth. Only used when points are broken down by source.
Default: 1. Adjustable from 0 to 5 in steps of 1.
In the app: “Points per settlement”.
Points per city: what is the default in Catan Victory Points?
How much a city is worth. Upgrading a settlement to a city is a net gain of one point, not two.
Default: 2. Adjustable from 0 to 5 in steps of 1.
In the app: “Points per city”.
Points for Longest Road or Largest Army: what is the default in Catan Victory Points?
The value of each of the two bonus cards. They move between players, so taking one from someone is a four point swing.
Default: 2. Adjustable from 0 to 5 in steps of 1.
In the app: “Points for Longest Road or Largest Army”.
Show who is in the lead: on or off in Catan Victory Points?
Some groups prefer not to see a running leader because it makes everyone gang up on them. Turn this off to keep the standings quiet.
Default: on.
In the app: “Show who is in the lead”.
