Win/Loss Tally Rules — How to Play and Keep Score

This is the simplest mode in the app and probably the most used one. A group on holiday plays twenty games of table tennis, six frames of pool and a kubb match in the garden, and nobody remembers by Thursday who is actually ahead. One tap per completed game gives a wins, losses and draws record, a points table and a current streak.

Overview

This is the simplest mode in the app and probably the most used one. A group on holiday plays twenty games of table tennis, six frames of pool and a kubb match in the garden, and nobody remembers by Thursday who is actually ahead. One tap per completed game gives a wins, losses and draws record, a points table and a current streak.

Setup

Add everyone who is playing, including people who will only join for some games. Decide how many wins take the match, or set that number high and use the sheet as a running tally for the whole week. Choose whether draws are possible before you start, since it changes what a tap records.

How to play

Play a game. Tap the winner. The app writes a win for them and a loss for everyone else who took part in that game, and moves on. If draws are allowed, the tie option records a draw for both sides instead. Players who sat out a game are left blank and their record is unaffected.

Scoring

Each completed game is one row. The winner scores the points-for-a-win value, by default 1. A loser scores the points-for-a-loss value, by default 0. When draws are allowed, both sides score the points-for-a-draw value, by default 0.5, so two draws are worth exactly one win.

A player's total is wins times the win value, plus draws times the draw value, plus losses times the loss value. Blank rows are skipped entirely, so someone who joined on day three is not punished for the games before they arrived. Because of that, the table should show played, won, drawn and lost alongside the points, otherwise a player with a perfect record from two games looks worse than someone with ten wins from twenty.

A streak counts consecutive wins ending at the most recent game that player took part in. Any loss resets it to zero, and a draw ends it too.

Ending the game

The match ends when a player reaches the required number of wins, at which point remaining games are unnecessary. With the target set high, or with a reset period chosen, the tally simply keeps running and the leader is whoever has the most points at any moment. Equal points share the lead, and head-to-head records are the usual way a group settles that argument.

Common variations

League scoring with three points for a win is common when draws are allowed. Winner-stays-on is the standard format for a single table with a queue, and works well with a running tally rather than a fixed match length.

Negative scoresNever — scores only go up
Worth knowingOne entry per player per completed game. Enter 1 for a win, 0 for a loss and 0.5 for a draw when draws are allowed. The app normally records the whole row from a single tap on the winner.

House rules and settings

Every table plays Win/Loss Tally a little differently. These are the 9 rules groups argue about. Each one is a setting in the app — and changing it recalculates a match that is already in progress, which is the thing no other score keeper does.

Wins needed to take the match: what is the default in Win/Loss Tally?

How many wins finish the match. Two for a best of three, three for a best of five, four for a best of seven. Set it high to keep a running tally all week instead.

Default: 3. Adjustable from 1 to 20 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Wins needed to take the match”.

Allow draws: on or off in Win/Loss Tally?

Lets a game end level, with both sides recorded as drawing rather than one winning. Off by default because most games have to produce a winner.

Default: off.

In the app: “Allow draws”.

Points for a win: what is the default in Win/Loss Tally?

What a win is worth on the table. Football-style leagues sometimes use three.

Default: 1. Adjustable from 0 to 10 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Points for a win”.

Points for a draw: what is the default in Win/Loss Tally?

What a drawn game is worth to each side. Only used when draws are allowed.

Default: 0.5. Adjustable from 0 to 5 in steps of 0.5.

In the app: “Points for a draw”.

Points for a loss: what is the default in Win/Loss Tally?

What a loss is worth. Normally nothing, but a participation point keeps latecomers in touch.

Default: 0. Adjustable from 0 to 5 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Points for a loss”.

Track winning streaks: on or off in Win/Loss Tally?

Shows how many games in a row each player has won, which is usually the only statistic anyone argues about.

Default: on.

In the app: “Track winning streaks”.

Track head-to-head records: on or off in Win/Loss Tally?

Records who beat whom, so you can see that one player has lost nine straight to another despite an even overall record.

Default: off.

In the app: “Track head-to-head records”.

Reset the tally: what are the options in Win/Loss Tally?

Whether the tally carries on forever or starts fresh. A running total suits a holiday, a daily reset suits a tournament.

Default: Never - one running total. Three options:

  • Never - one running total
  • Every day
  • Every session

In the app: “Reset the tally”.

Winner stays on: on or off in Win/Loss Tally?

For games where only two people play at a time. The winner keeps the table and the next player in the queue challenges them.

Default: off.

In the app: “Winner stays on”.

Variants of Win/Loss Tally

Round robin

Everyone plays everyone once and the table is decided on points, with head-to-head results breaking ties.

King of the table

The winner stays on and the loser goes to the back of the queue, so the tally shows who held the table longest.

League points

Three points for a win and one for a draw, which rewards winning over drawing twice.

Win/Loss Tally is also known as

Match Tally, Wins and Losses, Ladder. These are the same game — the rules and the score sheet above apply to all of them.
