Pub Quiz Rules — How to Play and Keep Score

A quiz night is a scoring problem dressed up as an evening out. Teams answer a fixed number of questions per round, papers are swapped for marking, and the quizmaster reads the totals between rounds. What makes it awkward to track on paper is that not every round is worth the same, jokers double one round of a team's choosing, and a final wager can move a team from fourth place to first in a single question.

Overview

A quiz night is a scoring problem dressed up as an evening out. Teams answer a fixed number of questions per round, papers are swapped for marking, and the quizmaster reads the totals between rounds. What makes it awkward to track on paper is that not every round is worth the same, jokers double one round of a team's choosing, and a final wager can move a team from fourth place to first in a single question.

Setup

Decide how many rounds you are running and how many questions each contains, then set what a correct answer is worth. Register each team by name; team size is a house matter and does not affect scoring. If jokers are in play, collect each team's nomination before the round they apply to begins.

How to play

The quizmaster reads a round, teams write answers on a sheet, and papers are then passed to another team for marking. The marked score is called out and entered against the team. A running total is normally announced after every round, which is half the entertainment, though some quizzes hold the totals back until the final round to keep the result open.

Scoring

A normal round scores the number of correct answers multiplied by the points per question. With ten questions at one point each, the round maximum is ten. Half points, where enabled, are awarded at the marker's discretion and are added exactly as scored.

Weighted rounds. When custom weighting is on, each round carries its own maximum, so a picture round of twenty images can be worth twenty while a music round of ten clips is worth ten. Nothing is normalised — the raw numbers are simply summed.

Joker. A team may nominate exactly one round in the quiz. That round's score is then doubled, increased by half, or given a flat ten-point bonus depending on the setting. The joker is applied to the round score after any half points, and a joker played on a round scored zero is worth nothing.

Wipeout. A wipeout round pays the full round value only for a perfect sheet. One wrong answer scores zero for that round. If a joker is played on a wipeout round, the multiplier applies to whatever the round finally scored, which is often nothing.

Final wager. Before the last question is read, each team writes down a stake within the allowed range. A correct answer adds the stake to the running total, a wrong answer subtracts it. Teams may stake zero.

Ending the game

Once the last round and any wager are entered, totals are read out from the bottom of the table upwards. The highest total wins. Teams level on points are separated by the chosen tie-break; the nearest-number question is settled on absolute difference, so being twenty over and twenty under are equally close.

Common variations

Many quizzes add a table round handed out at the start, a connections round with a bonus for spotting the link, or a gamble round where teams choose to double or halve before they see the questions.

House rules and settings

Every table plays Pub Quiz a little differently. These are the 11 rules groups argue about. Each one is a setting in the app — and changing it recalculates a match that is already in progress, which is the thing no other score keeper does.

Number of rounds: what is the default in Pub Quiz?

How many rounds the quiz runs for. Six to eight is typical for an evening, with a break somewhere in the middle.

Default: 6. Adjustable from 1 to 20 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Number of rounds”.

Questions per round: what is the default in Pub Quiz?

How many questions are asked in each round. This sets the maximum a team can score in a normal round.

Default: 10. Adjustable from 1 to 50 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Questions per round”.

Points per question: what is the default in Pub Quiz?

What each correct answer is worth. Some quizzes give two points so that half marks for a partly right answer are still whole numbers.

Default: 1. Adjustable from 1 to 5 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Points per question”.

Allow half points: on or off in Pub Quiz?

Lets the quizmaster award half a mark for an answer that is close but not exact, such as a surname without the first name.

Default: off.

In the app: “Allow half points”.

Round weighting: what are the options in Pub Quiz?

Whether every round is worth the same, or each round can have its own point ceiling so a picture round can be worth more or less than a general knowledge one.

Default: All rounds worth the same. Two options:

  • All rounds worth the same
  • Set a maximum per round

In the app: “Round weighting”.

Joker round: on or off in Pub Quiz?

Lets each team nominate one round in advance whose score is multiplied. The joker must be declared before that round is marked and cannot be moved afterwards.

Default: on.

In the app: “Joker round”.

Joker value: what are the options in Pub Quiz?

How much the joker is worth when a team plays it. Doubling is the usual choice.

Default: Double that round. Three options:

  • Double that round
  • Add half that round again
  • Add a flat 10 points

In the app: “Joker value”.

Wipeout rounds: on or off in Pub Quiz?

Marks a round as all-or-nothing, so a team that gets every answer right scores the full amount and any mistake scores zero for the whole round.

Default: off.

In the app: “Wipeout rounds”.

Final wager round: what are the options in Pub Quiz?

An optional last question where teams stake points before hearing it. A correct answer adds the stake, a wrong one subtracts it, which can flip the leaderboard at the death.

Default: No wager. Four options:

  • No wager
  • Fixed stake for everyone
  • Bet up to your running total
  • Bet up to half your running total

In the app: “Final wager round”.

Allow negative totals: on or off in Pub Quiz?

Whether a team's running total can drop below zero after a failed wager or wipeout, or whether it is floored at zero.

Default: on.

In the app: “Allow negative totals”.

Tie-break: what are the options in Pub Quiz?

How to separate teams finishing level. The nearest-number question is the classic method and is decided by absolute distance, not by being under or over.

Default: Nearest to a secret number. Four options:

  • Nearest to a secret number
  • Sudden-death question
  • Highest single round score
  • Share the prize

In the app: “Tie-break”.
