Canasta Rules — How to Play and Keep Score

Canasta came out of Montevideo in the late 1940s and became the card craze of 1950s America. Two decks plus four jokers make one 108-card pack, four players sit as two partnerships, and each side builds melds of seven matching cards. A completed seven is a canasta and pays far more than the cards inside it, so the game is a race to finish piles rather than to collect points card by card. One net figure goes on the sheet per side per hand, so a rounds grid with a running total is all the app needs.

Overview

Canasta came out of Montevideo in the late 1940s and became the card craze of 1950s America. Two decks plus four jokers make one 108-card pack, four players sit as two partnerships, and each side builds melds of seven matching cards. A completed seven is a canasta and pays far more than the cards inside it, so the game is a race to finish piles rather than to collect points card by card. One net figure goes on the sheet per side per hand, so a rounds grid with a running total is all the app needs.

Setup

Use two decks and four jokers for two to four players, three decks and six jokers for five or six. Four players form fixed partnerships sitting opposite each other; with two or three it is every player for themselves. Deal eleven cards each, or thirteen in the two-handed game. Turn one card face up to start the discard pile; if it is a wild card or a red three, cover it and the pile begins frozen. Any red three dealt to you goes straight on the table and you draw a replacement.

How to play

On your turn, draw the top card of the stock or take the entire discard pile, then meld if you can, then discard one card. You may only take the pile if you can use its top card at once: when the pile is frozen you need a matching natural pair in hand, otherwise matching an existing meld is enough.

Melds are three or more cards of the same rank. Jokers and twos are wild and may join a meld, but never more than three of them and never more wilds than naturals. Black threes can only be melded as your final play, and discarding one stops the next player taking the pile. A meld of seven is a canasta: natural if it holds no wild card, mixed if it does. A side must finish a canasta before anyone on that side may go out.

Scoring

Each side gets one net number per hand:

  • Card points for every card melded: joker 50, ace 20, two 20, king down to eight 10, seven down to four 5, black three 5.
  • Plus 500 for each natural canasta and 300 for each mixed canasta.
  • Plus 100 for going out, or 200 instead if going out concealed, meaning the whole hand was laid down in a single turn including a canasta, with nothing melded earlier in the deal.
  • Plus 100 for each red three on the table, but if one side holds all four each is worth 200, giving 800. If a side never melded at all, its red threes count the same amount against it.
  • Minus the card value of every card still held, using the same table. A red three still in hand costs 100.

Card points count whether or not a meld reached seven; the bonuses sit on top. A hand can end negative.

The first meld a side makes in a hand must reach a minimum in card points set by that side's running total: below zero needs 15, from 0 to 1495 needs 50, from 1500 to 2995 needs 90, and 3000 or more needs 120. Bonuses and red threes do not count toward it.

Ending the game

Deal again until one side is at 5000 or more when a hand finishes. That side wins, or if both cross at once, the higher total does.

Common variations

Some groups play to 2500 or 3000, or 10000 for a long evening. A popular house rule fixes the minimum meld at 120 all game. Others require two canastas before going out, or drop the concealed bonus.

House rules and settings

Every table plays Canasta a little differently. These are the 12 rules groups argue about. Each one is a setting in the app — and changing it recalculates a match that is already in progress, which is the thing no other score keeper does.

Play to: what is the default in Canasta?

The game stops at the end of the first hand in which a side reaches this total. The higher total wins.

Default: 5000. Adjustable from 1000 to 20000 in steps of 500.

In the app: “Play to”.

Minimum first meld: what are the options in Canasta?

How many card points a side needs the first time it puts cards on the table in a hand. The banded option raises the bar as that side's running total climbs.

Default: By score band (15 / 50 / 90 / 120). Five options:

  • By score band (15 / 50 / 90 / 120)
  • Always 50
  • Always 90
  • Always 120
  • No minimum

In the app: “Minimum first meld”.

Natural canasta bonus: what is the default in Canasta?

Extra points for a completed seven-card meld that contains no wild cards.

Default: 500. Adjustable from 100 to 1000 in steps of 50.

In the app: “Natural canasta bonus”.

Mixed canasta bonus: what is the default in Canasta?

Extra points for a completed seven-card meld that uses at least one joker or two.

Default: 300. Adjustable from 100 to 1000 in steps of 50.

In the app: “Mixed canasta bonus”.

Going out bonus: what is the default in Canasta?

Extra points for the side that empties a player's hand and ends the deal.

Default: 100. Adjustable from 0 to 300 in steps of 25.

In the app: “Going out bonus”.

Concealed going out bonus: what is the default in Canasta?

Replaces the ordinary going out bonus when a player lays down an entire hand in one turn after melding nothing earlier in the deal.

Default: 200. Adjustable from 0 to 500 in steps of 50.

In the app: “Concealed going out bonus”.

Red three value: what is the default in Canasta?

Points for each red three a side puts on the table, provided that side has melded something. If it has melded nothing the same amount is subtracted instead.

Default: 100. Adjustable from 0 to 200 in steps of 25.

In the app: “Red three value”.

Double all four red threes: on or off in Canasta?

When one side collects every red three, each one counts twice as much, so four of them are worth 800 rather than 400.

Default: on.

In the app: “Double all four red threes”.

Penalty for a red three left in hand: what is the default in Canasta?

Red threes are supposed to be put down the moment you draw one. This is the deduction if a player is still holding one when the deal ends.

Default: 100. Adjustable from 0 to 500 in steps of 50.

In the app: “Penalty for a red three left in hand”.

Ask partner before going out: on or off in Canasta?

Lets a player ask their partner for permission to end the deal. The answer, yes or no, is binding.

Default: on.

In the app: “Ask partner before going out”.

Discard pile rules: what are the options in Canasta?

A frozen pile can only be taken with a matching natural pair from your hand. Some groups freeze it permanently to slow the game down.

Default: Standard freeze on wilds and red threes. Three options:

  • Standard freeze on wilds and red threes
  • Pile always frozen
  • Pile never frozen

In the app: “Discard pile rules”.

Number of decks: what are the options in Canasta?

Two decks suit two to four players. Add a third deck for five or six so the stock lasts.

Default: 2 decks plus 4 jokers. Two options:

  • 2 decks plus 4 jokers
  • 3 decks plus 6 jokers

In the app: “Number of decks”.

Variants of Canasta

Modern American Canasta

A tournament style with fixed hand sizes, required wild card canastas and much larger bonuses.

Samba

Three decks, sequences of the same suit may be melded, and a seven-card sequence pays a bonus of its own.

Two-handed Canasta

Each player draws two cards a turn, deals thirteen and must complete two canastas before going out.

Canasta is also known as

Classic Canasta, Classic American Canasta, Basic Canasta. These are the same game — the rules and the score sheet above apply to all of them.
