Darts 501 Rules — How to Play and Keep Score

The standard darts game, and the one most often scored on a chalkboard. Each player starts on 501 and subtracts what they throw until they land exactly on zero. It is in this catalogue because the mental arithmetic — subtracting three-dart totals under social pressure, then working out a finish — is exactly the chore an app removes.

Overview

The standard darts game, and the one most often scored on a chalkboard. Each player starts on 501 and subtracts what they throw until they land exactly on zero. It is in this catalogue because the mental arithmetic — subtracting three-dart totals under social pressure, then working out a finish — is exactly the chore an app removes.

Setup

Two players or two teams, throwing three darts per visit. The board is standard: each number has a treble ring worth three times its value and a double ring worth twice, with an outer bull of 25 and an inner bull of 50. The maximum visit is 180, three treble twenties.

Decide who throws first by each player throwing one dart at the bull, nearest wins. In a match, the loser of a leg throws first in the next.

How to play

A player throws three darts, and the total of that visit is subtracted from their remaining score. Play alternates. The aim is to reduce the score to exactly zero.

With the standard double-out rule, the final dart must land in a double or the inner bull. This is why the endgame is a game in itself: from 40 a player throws at double 20, and missing into the single leaves 20, still an even number and still finishable. Leaving an odd number, or leaving 1, is a positional mistake rather than a scoring one.

Scoring

Each visit's total is subtracted from the player's remaining score. Entries are what was thrown, not what remains — the app does the subtraction, which is the whole point of using it.

A visit is a bust when any of these happens:

  • the score would go below zero;
  • the score would land on exactly 1, from which no double finish exists;
  • the score reaches zero on a dart that is not a double, when double-out is on.

On a bust the entire visit is voided by default and the player's score returns to what it was at the start of that visit. The turn ends immediately.

A player wins the leg by reaching exactly zero on a legal finishing dart.

Common visit totals worth knowing, because they are what people actually score: 26 is the classic beginner's 20-5-1, 60 is a single treble twenty, 100 and 140 are routine for a decent player, and 180 is the maximum.

Ending the game

A leg ends when a player checks out on zero. A match ends when a player has won the configured number of legs — traditionally best of five, so three legs.

With sets switched on, legs accumulate into sets and the match is decided on sets won, which is how televised darts is scored.

Common variations

Straight-out play for beginners, double-in for a slower and more traditional game, 301 for a quick leg and 701 for teams. Around the Clock and Cricket are different games rather than variations, and have their own sheets.

Worked example

Settings: targetScore: 501, doubleOut: true, bustBehaviour: revert, legsToWin: 1. Players: Anna, Ben. Anna throws first.

VisitAnna throwsAnna remainingBen throwsBen remaining
1140361100401
218018160341
341140140201
41400 — checkout201

Anna's fourth visit is 140 finishing on double 20, which is a legal double-out. She wins the leg.

Expected standings: Anna remaining 0, rank 1 — winner; Ben remaining 201, rank 2. finished: true.

Now the bust case, which is the part implementations get wrong. Suppose at visit 4 Anna is on 140 and throws treble 20, treble 20, single 20 — a total of 140 reaching zero, but the last dart is not a double. That is a bust: the whole visit is voided and Anna stays on 140, not 0 and not 20. The next visit starts from 140 again.

Second bust case: Anna on 40 throws a single 20 (leaving 20), then a single 20 (reaching zero on a single). Bust — she returns to 40, not 0.

Third case: Anna on 40 throws a single 19, leaving 21, then a single 20, leaving 1. Bust on the second dart, because 1 cannot be finished. She returns to 40 and the third dart is not thrown.

House rules and settings

Every table plays Darts 501 a little differently. These are the 7 rules groups argue about. Each one is a setting in the app — and changing it recalculates a match that is already in progress, which is the thing no other score keeper does.

Start from: what is the default in Darts 501?

The number every player counts down from. 501 is standard for singles, 301 for a shorter game, 701 for teams.

Default: 501. Adjustable from 101 to 1001 in steps of 100.

In the app: “Start from”.

Must finish on a double: on or off in Darts 501?

The last dart has to land in a double or the bullseye. This is the standard rule and the reason a leg can stall at 2.

Default: on.

In the app: “Must finish on a double”.

Must start on a double: on or off in Darts 501?

Nothing counts until a player hits a double. Older and slower; most modern play is straight-in.

Default: off.

In the app: “Must start on a double”.

When a player busts: what are the options in Darts 501?

Going below zero, landing exactly on one, or reaching zero without a double is a bust. Normally the entire three-dart visit is voided and the score returns to what it was.

Default: Whole visit is void. Two options:

  • Whole visit is void
  • Darts before the bust count

In the app: “When a player busts”.

Legs to win the match: what is the default in Darts 501?

A match is usually best of an odd number of legs. Set to 1 for a single leg.

Default: 3. Adjustable from 1 to 21 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Legs to win the match”.

Sets to win: what is the default in Darts 501?

Tournament play groups legs into sets. Leave at 1 to score legs only.

Default: 1. Adjustable from 1 to 13 in steps of 1.

In the app: “Sets to win”.

Track checkout attempts: on or off in Darts 501?

Records how often a player hits a finish when they have one available. Useful for practice, noise for a pub game.

Default: off.

In the app: “Track checkout attempts”.

Variants of Darts 501

Straight out

No double needed to finish. Faster and much kinder to beginners — turn off "Must finish on a double".

Around the clock

A different game entirely — hit 1 through 20 in order. Scored as a separate sheet, not a variation of this one.

Cricket

The other common pub darts game, scored on marks rather than a countdown. It is its own definition in this catalogue.

Darts 501 is also known as

501, Five-O-One, 301, 701, Down to Zero. These are the same game — the rules and the score sheet above apply to all of them.
